Think you could use some support to Quit?
WE NEED SMOKERS INTERESTED IN QUITTING
within the next month (or who have just quit in the last week)
A joint project by the VicHealth Centre for Tobacco Control at The Cancer Council Victoria, and the Information Systems Dept at Melbourne Uni.
We are particularly interested in finding out: (a) whether the Internet and phone-based quitting assistance is effective, and (b) if people use help from both sources, whether they are more likely to quit than those using only help from only one source, or just trying on their own. This study is about how effective Internet and telephone resources are in helping smokers quit.
You only need to live in Australia and have a mobile phone number so that we can contact you.
There are three very short surveys all together.
  • One survey you do online now. Another in a month or so and the final in 6 months.
Each will only take a few minutes and asks about your smoking and any recent quit attempts.
  • Fill in the short survey. Then we may recommend some forms of help you might like to consider, though you are under no obligation.
  • In about a month we will contact you to find out whether you have made a quit attempt, how it has gone, and what you have used to help you quit.
  • Finally, we will contact you about 6 months later to find out whether you have quit successfully or not.
Find out more at WWW.EQUIT.ORG.AU BEST OF LUCK!
This research has been approved by The Cancer Council Victoria Human Research Ethics Committee.

    Australasian Masters Games 2009 - Feb 23-28
from: BRASSY. - Joffa Egan has come up with what I think is a great idea.
Each year, the Australian Masters games is held. They have moved to Geelong for 2008. These games are sort of like the Olympics, except it is all in age groups. There's an AFL competition, which teams can enter. There will be two age groups, over 35s and over 45s. Joffa’s idea, which I think is fantastic, is that we try and get a team together from the Darwin group to participate. Have a look at www.australasianmasters.com and let me know your thoughts. - Regards Steve Brass steve@bracom.com.au +61 407326210
from: PMac (Geelong). - Team entries close Friday 5 December 2008.
Geelong Superules has entered two teams one in each age group. Hope to see you there.

AFL RECFOOTY KICKS OFF - 9:51 AM Mon 20 October, 2008 AFL Rec Footy - A game for everyone
It's time to register your team in AFL Recreational Football (Rec Footy), with the 2008-09 summer season kicking off next month in competitions across Australia. Rec Footy provides a great opportunity for all Australians to participate in a modified game of Australian Football in either a male, female or mixed team. Played in a friendly social environment the modified rules make the game less physically demanding and allow people of all ages and abilities to get involved.
The Rec Footy season runs from mid-October till the end of December.
In its fourth year an estimated 70 competitions, involving over 700 teams and 7,000 participants will take part in a Rec Footy competition across the country.
The main changes to the traditional game of Australian Football are:
The field (100m x 50m) is divided into three zones, a 60m mid zone and two 20m scoring zones.
The games consist of 2 x 20 minute halves (minimal time commitment)
Teams score by kicking the football to one of three designated forwards in their scoring zone, only forwards can kick for goal after marking the ball in their scoring zone.
TURNOVERS (occur when loose ball makes contact with the ground): the opposing team gains possession of the ball from where the ball first made contact with the ground.
TAGS: The player with the ball is dispossessed when one or both of his/her flags are completely removed by an opponent (flag belts worn).
There is no tackling, bumping or shepherding.

3rd Divn Finals Eligibility - There have been some questions from Knox and Werribee about the 3rd Division Finals Eligibility as it was described as 5/11 at the recent Presidents Meeting.
At the 3rd Presidents Meeting (23/6/08) it was moved to make eligibility for Div1 at least 3/8 games, seconded and carried.
It may have been assumed it was 5/11 for Div3, but not recorded in the minutes.
Previously in the Club Manual and the 1st Presidents Meeting Minutes (9/4/08) it was written and emailed that eligibility for all divisions was 4 games. (click on image to left)

Bruce Hill's 700 - South Yarra Masters Veteran Bruce Hill plays his 700th competition game in the last round vs Frankston on August 17.
Bruce started as a 19 year old in 1967 and has played seasons of football (except 1994).
The highlight of his career was several stellar seasons in the NSWFL in the 70s.
As president of South Yarra Masters since it's founding, Bruce has made Masters Footy available to guys who have seen the hard side of life. Along with Sacred Heart Mission and RecLink, this gives them a focus where they can reintegrate into mainstream community through the social interaction of a footy club.
Vic Metro Superules MastersAFL have a great embassador in Bruce Hill.
Bruce will be retiring from playing after this game.

RISK FACTORS... OBESE v HEAVY BUILD? -
Newspaper articles this week trumpet the fact that Australians are the "Number One Overweight Country in the World" (USA is still #1 Obese country). Certainly, monitoring your weight is one way of identifying some Risk Factors for disease...
Some of the contention comes from dodgy calculations:
BMI: Body Mass Index, only uses weight and height - so TARZAN is Obese!! - RIDICULOUS
WHR: Half Waist/Height Ratio - now TARZAN is Anorexic!! - STILL NOT RIGHT.
SO - HOW DO YOU CORRECTLY USE BODY FAT CALCULATIONS?
REMEMBER - Individuals vary, so these calculations are best used for monitoring one person's progress. To get the most accurate value for actual FAT Percentage, Sports Medicine experts would measure Skin-Folds at several points on the body, Age, Weight and Height.
A REDUCED version is the measurement of 3 POINT SKIN-FOLD: 100mm under the arm (vertical), side of waist (horizontal) and side of mid thigh (vertical), and also includes an Age component. See BODY FAT RATIO Calculator
This uses a complex calculation for Body Density and thence Body Fat Percentage, using measurements of Fat. Does it mean Height and Weight are insignificant?
All in All, it's perilously close to a straight line (see graph above), so Old Merciless has plotted that simple straight line and come up with a calculation you can do in your head...

    Mercilessly Simple formula for calculating
    Body Fat % = (THREEPOINT SKIN-FOLD in mm) / 4 + (AGE - 5) / 10

  • Yes Yes: It is a smidgeon out in a couple of places, less than 0.5% for most, and in the high readings it tends to say you are fatter than you should be - that's OK
  • ADD 10% for AGE?: The PLUS AGE/10 bit shows young guys with the same skinfolds are actually fitter than the saggy skinned oldies.
Also suggests oldies have more fattiness internally rather than under the skin.
  • INDIVIDUALS VARY: so these calculations are best used for monitoring your progress as you get fitter. Say you lose 7mm in the 3 Skin-Folds, that's equivalent to 2%, or if you weigh 100kg, you have lost 2kg OF FAT. - even if you put on 3kg muscle weight!
Somewhat counter-intuitively, the same 7mm loss would indicate only a 1kg FAT loss in a 50kg player

    Signs of STROKE . . . . . . Act FAST ! - !
    * TRAPS for OLD PLAYERS II * Today I got an email with some interesting points about stroke, interesting because it sounded TRUE and also because it sounded like a HOAX!
Well it is both of those things, so I decided to investigate the Australian Government pages for the RIGHT message for us old codgers in Australia.
    www.strokefoundation.com.au is an excellent site

In 2007 the National Stroke Foundation continued to educate the general public about the signs of stroke, with a greater emphasis on stroke being a medical emergency and for people to call 000 if they experience the signs of stroke or recognise them in someone else.
Too many people wait to see if the symptoms disappear instead of calling an ambulance straight away. Time loss is brain loss, and getting immediate treatment can be the difference between severe disability and making a good recovery after a stroke.
FAST is an easy way for everyone to recognise the signs of stroke:
Facial weakness - can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
Arm weakness - can the person raise both arms?
Speech difficulty - can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
Time to act FAST - call 000 immediately
The signs of a stroke are:
    * Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg on either or both sides of the body
    * Difficulty speaking or understanding
    * Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall
    * Loss of vision, sudden blurred or decreased vision in one or both eyes
    * Headache, usually severe and of abrupt onset or an unexplained change in the pattern of headaches
    * Difficulty swallowing

    FAST TV Campaign

  • BEWARE:
Yes - the Email is true: An uneven tongue may be another indicator.
BUT BEWARE - Passing these three tests does NOT indicate ABSENCE of a blockage!
Transient Stroke (TIA) symptoms may go away in a short time, but not the danger. The clot may move.
If you recognise the signs of a stroke (even temporary) - act FAST
  • 3 hours: Quoting the email: A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
  • DODGY-EMAILS: Though the message may be factual, true and even helpful, this is the kind of email that may deliver a warhead inside a sugar coating. Typical Hoax emails have many of the features in this email.
From http://hoax-slayer.com, it appears that someone has seen fit to embellish the story by adding a description of an alleged incident in which the diagnostic test was used to good effect. However, there is no way of telling if "Susie" and "Sherry" are real people or just fictional characters….
The cardiologist saving one in ten bit is lifted verbatim from the cough procedure for heart attack victims email. Notably, earlier versions of the email did not include the "Susie and Sherry" story….
Such embellishments are completely unnecessary and detract from the underlying message….
A problem with email forwards is that the core information tends to become garbled or diluted as various individuals decide to add to or modify the message as it travels through cyberspace. …
This unfortunate tendency for messages to mutate as they travel means that it may not always be a good idea to pass on even those rare email forwards that contain factual and verifiable information…
Misuse of such information due to false assumptions or lack of understanding can have dangerous repercussions…
If you do decide to forward this email, I would suggest that you first remove the superfluous information it contains….
Secondly, include a warning about the danger of not seeking medical attention just because a person can successfully perform the three steps….
Thirdly, I think it would also be a good idea to add a link to the original source so that recipients can check the information for themselves….

Bali Masters 9s - The Bali Masters 9s went well. The tournament was well organized. It was played at The Canggu Club, a private club with a large well grassed soccer/rugby ground and member’s facilities, sporting rooms and outstanding playing facilities. The club is almost a modern oasis surrounded by rice fields.
The Aussie AFL Master’s contingent consisted of the Castlemaine Magpies from Vic Country, Darwin Dingoes from NT and South Coast Buccaneers from Merimbula with all three teams financially supported by AFL Masters. There was a further team from Darwin, the Darwin Waratahs. The Darwin Waratahs also had some interchange support from the Darwin Dingoes led by master captain/coach Kim Cowan. Our teams enjoyed their tournament with good results, both on and off the field. Click on the following for details of all teams: BALI9s
The operational side of the tournament went well with each game running for 2 x 5 minute halves. It ran smoothly from 8 am until Grand Final at around 5pm. All 10 teams played 4 games during the day with the Grand Finalists playing one extra game. In total, 21 games were played. Click on the following to see the draw: Draws
The Grand Final involved Darwin Waratahs and the Bali Geckos with the Waratahs getting up to win. The Presentation Night was held at a great night spot near Kuta Beach with plenty of good food and drinks along with cabaret style entertainment and dancing. There were plenty with sore heads next day.
We’ve taken some DVD footage and the Bali Geckos has taken hundreds of photos that can be seen by clicking on Gallery and then following the prompts. We will make a slide show to play at the Darwin Presentation Night.
We are looking to provide funding support for 3 more teams in 2009 and 3 in 2010. - Cheers - Neil King

TRAPS for OLD PLAYERS - There are several lifestyle traps that a bloke can get into. Diet, smoking, drinking, gambling etc can be addictive practices. Even Masters Footy can be addictive, but maybe not too damaging - unless one of theses aforementioned lifestyle practices has started a time-bomb ticking.
Maybe a bloke doesn't realise the problem, or thinks he's alone without help. But there are health related websites that address these issues.
On MAFV.COM, we are going to start a series of articles that will put these issues out in the open a bit more with the aim of improving lifestyles of our demographic.

New National Logo - The National Board are proud to advise that MAF- now known as AFL MASTERS has a new Logo (left).
All new jumpers and apparel are to have the AFL MASTERS logo on the right side of the Jumper, as of this date, other stuff on the left. No other writing is to be above or below the AFL MASTERS LOGO, that must be on the opposite side to the AFL MASTERS LOGO.
Each Club will be required to contact the VicMetro League for use of the AFL MASTERS LOGO. More info to come next week. - Ian Fletcher
  • Hold off on jumper logos: There will be a holdup on logo approvals until there is a Heads of Management Agreement about all sorts of stuff that the lawyers might come up with. Things like Victorian Leagues are under the VFL banner, who owns which brand, etc.
More news to follow probably by end of season.

    NEW FIXTURE
    - FEDERAL move to Div3 - affects D1, D3 and M1
Ladies & Gentlemen, Our League has experienced another unfortunate occurrence.
On Tuesday Federal/Bayside informed us that they were in real trouble fielding ONE side in 2008. They asked for some leniency and being one of our foundation Clubs we have considered all our options. With due consideration it has been decided that Federal/Bayside as a single entity be demoted to Division 3 and fill up the bye in that Division.
    * Federal move to Div1, as a consequence Div1 have a bye, Div3 now have no byes.
    * Federal/Bayside will only play 9 games for points. All other Div3 Clubs will play 11 games.
    * Federal Masters dropped, M1 have been reorganised to elimimate byes.
Div1 now play only 8 games for the year, therefore it has been decided to make each Division 1 Club fees $450 less 10% discount if paid early.
Any other anomalies will be adjusted in season 2009 and possibly in season 2010.
PLEASE make sure your Club is aware of the NEW FIXTURE. Printer friendly version
Sorry about any inconvenience BUT it is unavoidable. Your sincerely Ian (Fletch) Fletcher

    Murrumbeena and Parkmore OUT of D3 - * - 9 sides in D3
    - Murrumbeena and now Parkmore have pulled out of Division 3.
    * - NO CHANGE to Divisions 1,2 or Masters.
Division 3 will require a SIGNIFICANT CHANGE in the draw
    - PROBABLY shortening the season in line with the other Divisions.
The first 2 rounds should still be played as previously fixtured to get that extra home game, even if a practice match.
Initial evaluation of a new draw indicates there will be little change in home ground dates for each club, but some change in opponents.
Balancing HOME games is the problem now. With the ideal of 4 home, 4 away and one bye each, just substituting a bye for the missing team will unsatisfactorily give some clubs only 3 home games, and others 5.
New Draft will be posted ASAP

HOT WEATHER SOLUTION - Be very careful with our greatest asset, ie your players.
On HOT days make sure you have a heat stress minimisation program in operation before the game. Enforce hydration program, supply shade and sunblock.
Remember the old "wet hanky around the neck" trick.
If you think we're joking, check out NORTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE UMPIRES RULES...
    9. MATCH CANCELLATION - ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS
9.2 If the air temperature, as broadcast on ABC radio, is below 0 degrees Celsius, or in excess of 35 degrees Celsius, one hour prior to the scheduled start time of an official Northern Football League match at any grade, no umpire is permitted to officiate in such match and the match shall be cancelled.
  • For PLAYER SAFETY: Be willing to delay, curtail or shorten a practice match, lengthen breaks, rotate all players
  • WEAR A HAT: for those bald badgers among us, remember you can still get a kick with a hat on!
    check out SUNSMART
  • Duty of care - Cooperate: While we are not exactly emplayers:
State Occupational Health and Safety Acts require employers to provide and maintain safe working environments. Employers must ensure their employees can work safely and without risk to their health - this includes exposure to UV radiation. In turn, employees have a responsibility for their own safety and health and must follow UV protection policies and use sun protective measures provided.
Cooperation between employers and employees can help minimise UV exposure in the workplace, this may include:
    * reducing the amount of time outdoor workers spend in the sun.
    * providing and maintaining equipment needed to protect workers from the sun.
    * information, instruction, training and supervision to reduce UV exposure.
More information about sunsmart workplaces is available in The Cancer Council's position statement on Sun protection in the workplace.
